State Of The Trout: Annual June Hiatus

Posted in Uncategorized

Sorry, there’s no recap today. I fully intended for there to be one, but then I went grocery shopping this morning and slept for hours and hours afterward. Such is the life of someone with Fibromyalgia, although I often forget that and spend a long time telling myself that I’m awful and lazy. Where are my chronically ill people? You know what I’m talking about.

I wanted to update everyone on a few things. One, Mr.Jen’s weird ass injury is still being weird as ass. Thankfully, it’s not a broken neck (which was presented way too casually at a follow-up appointment: “We’ll just do an x-ray and make sure you haven’t broken your neck.”) but that also means they still don’t know what the fuck is going on. He’ll be heading into physical therapy in a couple of weeks. I appreciate everybody who has checked in or offered possible explanations from a similar experience or who have just sent good vibes our way. That means a lot.

In other news, every June for the past…I think this is the seventh year? I go on a retreat to Gay, Michigan with my awesome author friends, including Bronwyn Green, Jessica Jarman, and Kris Norris. Every year, we spend a week in a remote cabin right on the shore of Lake Superior. There’s no phone or internet service or children or family and we only each have to make dinner one time all week and we write until our fingers bleed and we laugh until our faces hurt. I’ll be working on the next Sophie Scaife book, The Daughter, while I’m up there, as well as something new I can’t announce yet but which I’m super excited for.

It’s literally the only “vacation” I can take without feeling guilty about not working. Although, I’ll probably come home feeling like I didn’t work hard enough despite writing like 20,000 words or something.

So, this will be the last blog post until Monday, June 24. Wish me lots of words in the meantime, and if I can get cell signal you might see some Facebook Live updates or some Tweets or shit while I’m up there, but to be perfectly honest, it’s rare that we can get signal. Which is kind of the point.

Everybody have a super week otherwise, and hopefully, this year will go a lot better than last year did.

I hope you and the other ladies have a great time. Be productive but also relax. Let the waters of Lake Superior wash away your troubles. As for Mr. Jen, I will send healing energy to him. And as for you — Fibro Sister, this weather is kicking my ass, too, but I will wing some Reiki your way, as well. Blessings for a safe and happy journey! See you when you get back!

  5. Have fun! Wish I could take a retreat like that. The UP is beautiful. Hopefully it’ll be a little warmer for ya. Sure hasn’t felt like June this year. At least I haven’t had to run the AC yet. I did, however, had to turn up the thermostat today because it’s a little chilly in ye olde apartment (low tonight of 48 in June? Get out of here!). I’ve never had to do that. Last year at this time I’m sure I was sweating!

Chronically ill person here, I get you! My CFS counsellor managed to get me dividing my time up so I could live and think I was normal. Been thrown in the deep end at work and oh boy do I feel like death! But no escaping, I’m basically in charge for a month

I hope mr Jen’s physio goes well x

Have a great vacation! I don’t know what I’ll do with myself without recaps to read! lol

Hope Mr. Jen gets figured out and fixed.

I’m a Hashi’s victim, so I get the wanting to do things and just not being able to. I don’t think I’m lazy or bad, but I do get angry at my own body for what I often feel like is a betrayal.

I think my spouse is enjoying Jenny’s vacation as much as she is: I’m not coming home with the latest recap summaries of The Mister! (My wife doesn’t want to be ‘contaminated’ with really dreadful writing for fear of it affecting her writing, so she barely tolerates my summaries of EEL’s latest revelations.

But we do agree that EEL did somehow manage to capture millions of readers even with her badly written 50 series. Somehow it touched a nerve and was popular. Unfortunately that gave EEL license to not grow in her own writing skills (she most likely thinks she doen’t have to grow as a writer now that she’s famous) but this work is so amateurish (and I’m projecting that future works will be as well) that in short order EEL will fade to obscurity.

Well, one can only hope, right?

I agree. EEL’s success was a perfect storm of luck and timing. There is no way it was about talent or creativity since she lacks both. It was an amateurly written, plagiarized fanfic that hit at just the right time for just the right audience. And it is utterly infuriating.

I don’t blame your wife for not wanting to be contaminated. I have a bad tendency to start writing in the style of whatever I’m reading. Lucky for me, I only write for myself so it doesn’t really matter, but no one should be contaminated by EEL’s writing.

I hope that Jenny does a brain bleaching at least once a week, though daily would probably be better, to remove any residual bad writing this book has left in her head. She’s too good to be contaminated with this crap.
