A decision on 50 Shades…

Posted in Uncategorized

So, I’ve spent the better part of the last two days in a constant state of combined anger, offense, and just general “oh my god, people are talking about me, and I don’t know how to handle it” stress. I want to make it clear that just someone saying, “shut up, I don’t like what you’re saying,” would never stop me from speaking my mind. That has never been the issue here. What was the issue was that another author was getting caught in the crossfire.

I think now, though, it’s pretty clear that I am Jennifer ArmINtrout, author of books written for a mostly adult audience, in an adult genre, and not a similarly named author who writes fiction for Young Adults. I’ve tweeted, I’ve blogged, I’ve done what I can to clear up the confusion, and I think that at this point the people who still don’t get it will never get it. I assume these are the same people who confuse Steve Martin with Steve Martini and Anne Rice with Luanne Rice. Sometimes, there is just no educating people.
So, with that in mind, chapter nine will post tomorrow. It’s your prerogative as a reader whether or not my abominable behavior will influence your buying habits. I can’t control you, you can’t control me, so long as we’re both clear on this, things should be nothin’ but a field of daisies from here on out, right?
See y’all bright and early tomorrow, since I’ve been kicked out of the Sunshine Sisterhood anyway and my mornings are free.

Thank-Goodness. I started reading these and was tensing up at the idea you stopped mid book. I never want to read the actual book and this summary is the hilarious answer to my prayers. Also, as a writer myself I totally understand the “people are talking about me and I don’t know how to handle it” stress. Comes with the territory I think.

I just started reading the book and had friend point out your blog, so I have been reading the chapter then reading your recap. You have made me feel like a normal woman. I am struggling with reading this book starting with the first chapter, but because of all the controversy being posted every where I wanted to get my own opinion of the book. You are helping me get through this book by bringing comic relief to my reading and inner turmoil about 50 shades of Grey. When I saw your post about the other author and how you might not post anymore I was really sad that I might lose my “reading companio.” I am ecstatic that you’re continuing!

  6. Thanks for continuing! Even though I disagree only every great once in a while with your opinion, it’s still a wonderfully funny read. After all, one doesn’t have to agree to enjoy. And Ms. Armintrout, I enjoy your writing a lot!

THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING!!!! I found your site through a Jezebel.com link and love your review. Your work is renewing my soul as I am chronically overtired from work and having a 9 month old teething baby. I was sad at the thought of not ever finishing the book through your eyes as I probably won’t read the book itself. LOL work!

I’m glad you didn’t stop. As an author, I’m sure EL James expects criticism. I always notice that the people who defend things are more offensive than the original poster. I once wrote a criticism about Twilight on a Facebook post. The backlash sucked and my comment wasn’t even that offensive. It was my opinion and I shared it. I got told I should commit suicide and all sorts of other mean things. These people told me I’m a horrible person, and yet somehow they are good people? A good person doesn’t tell someone to kill themselves over an opinion.

Someone on Quora linked to your 50 Shades review and I was seriously going to DM that person with a strongly worded WTF!? if it turned out they sent me to this hilarity only to leave me frustrated without a review to the very end.

I know this late, but… you go, girl! Don’t let some immature butt hurt assholes keep you from rightfully makibg fun of a truly terribly written book.
