More State of The Trout

Posted in Uncategorized

Hey y’all! If you follow me on twitter, you may have noticed the #1 symptom of illness in Jenny Trout: explosive, aimless tweeting. I’m so sick! My husband had this wretched cold, and he passed it to me. I need to really set firm rules for myself and not have sex with that man while he’s ill. In my defense, something about nursing a sick guy back to health really turns my crank.

I’m also getting ready to put up the pre-orders for The Girlfriend. My goal is to have it available for pre-order on the 15th, but let’s see where the wind takes us. Having never done a self-pubbed release this way before, I’m not real sure of how everything goes down.

I know people are missing the Buffy/50 Shades recaps, and those will be back on track soon, but right now everything in my work life is like a clogged pipe or something. Good things are happening– but they’re happening all at once, making things kind of inconvenient.

Before I go, let me share with you some of the highlights of the last three days of illness:

  • I binge watched Orange is The New Black
  • I had to tell my four year old to stop twerking
  • My ten year old started playing Battlefield 3 online. I heard an outraged “He’s TEABAGGING me!” yesterday
  • Strawberry preserves in oatmeal is amazing

Have any of you guys watched Orange is The New Black? What did you think of it? I’m rewatching it with D-Rock, so now at least one person understands the joke when I say, “Don’t fuck me with me. I’m a Russian, I’ll pop your fake titty.”

Orange Is The New Black was fantastic, with the exception of two things: 1) I think it’s important to note that while it has a very diverse cast the main character is still a privileged cigs endear white girl, because of course.

    SPOIKERS!!!!!

And 2. I don’t know why but I was really emotionally triggered by the reconnection between Piper and Alex. I, too, have been in dire circumstances where I drifted from a safe, loving, healthy significant other back to a manipulative, horrible but EXCITING! ex. It didn’t end well. I found it frustrating to watch that in the show and even more frustrating to see people on the web really shipping Piper/Alex. But that’s a totally personal thing.

    • WRT your #1 point, the show is based off of a WASP’s memoir, so I can see why they didn’t change up her race and background. However, when you stop and consider how fucked up it is that “white lady goes to prison” is considered a “fish out of water” tale… I hope that they acknowledge that in season 2.

Yeah, I agree. And a lot of people have printed out how fucked up it is that a privileged white WASP-y woman goes to prison and ends up with a book deal while many women–as we see on the show-leave prison and end up with absolutely nothing.

  3. I love the diverse representations of women in the show. It’s nice to have such a range of people from all kinds of backgrounds represented. Such a change from Gossip Girls kinds of shows.

Orange is the New Black was great! Took a few episodes to really get into the groove and I love the back stories on everyone. Piper is annoying, but she’s supposed to be right?

  6. I LUUUURRRRVVVEEE Orange is the New Black!!!!! My wife and I have watched the entire series three times through already (and yes, we do have lives 🙂 ) I totally ship Piper and Alex, although I can see why some people wouldn’t. Their connection is so real and HOT!

In their defense – the way the storyline is written, it doesn’t look like their relationship was very disfunctional or abusive. They were just doing illegal things, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have a real and loving relationship. Alex is written sort of like a business woman though, so that may be skewing my view a bit.

Anyway, I am so glad you loved it! I almost wish you would re-cap it, but it seems like that might not work with such a great show.

Birthday present! I can preorder on my birthday (yay!) and then get the book when it comes out and I need some sanity/recovery help after my mom goes home.

    Awesome.

I have mixed feelings about the show. I’ve only watched the first three episodes so far, and while I find it entertaining and very interesting, it also turns me off a little bit, and it’s hard for me to articulate why. Maybe it reflects poorly on me, as a priveleged white girl, that the show makes me uncomfortable. The show was intended to be edgy and challenging, and I love the idea, in theory. But the show just doesn’t click with me. I wish I could say it’s because the show tries too hard to be edgy and challenging. But I think the thing I really hate is the series of unfortunate events that conspire to make bad things happen, it drives me crazy to watch a train wreck happening in all forms of media, it’s not fun for me. It stresses me out to watch people make bad decisions and be unable to avoid the crazy terrible stuff coming down the road. I know I should be able to appreciate the bad decisions as a part of the protagonist’s character, not my own, and enjoy the ensuing character development. But I can’t. It just makes me anxious.

I have watched OITNB twice now. Red remains my favorite! Also, the guy who plays Pornstache was so hot when he was on Weeds. Its weird to see him as such a slime-ball, yet still be so attracted to him.

  10. Feel better soon! I tend to figure that if he’s got something, I’ve got no way to avoid it, and have sex anyway. I’m blessed that my mom applies the same logic to babysitting my kids!

  11. excited for the Girlfriend! And can’t wait for more Orange is the New Black! I was at a drive-in movie in DC the other day when a group of 20something hipsters (which…oh lord… i guess you could say about me as well, yikes) were talking about the show and one of the girls said “I, like, refuse to watch Orange is the New Black. Its, like, too pedestrian” (lol, wut?) But it gives everyone here something to watch while waiting for the next season of House of Cards, I guess.
And about having to tell your four year old to stop twerking: We have that problem at work (and I work at a government building haha yiiiikes! So, you know, thats why nothing in government gets done. We are all too busy twerking)

eheheh i love how everyone is all “OitNB! OH EM GEE!” and i’m sitting here stifling giggles at “i had to tell my four year old to stop twerking”. mostly because i can see my OWN (almost) four year old twerking, and the amusement is multiplied by like… a million.

I liked the show, I find it hilarious and poignant at the same time. I laughed so hard when her fiance was telling her what he bought at whole foods and she was having food orgasms I guess? And the back stories are so interesting. Will be watching more. I can’t wait for your 50 shades recaps, I relish them so. I hope you are feeling better.

I loved Orange, but then felt bad about it. Reminded me of The Help a bit too much, the whole “white woman writes a book about how her privilege is totally showing” thing, I think. But it is better than the help, and captain janeway is in it, and it looks like somthing really bad is going to happen to Pipier, which makes me glad.
