Christmas is All Around! The Love, Actually twitter watch-a-long!

Posted in Uncategorized

Love Christmas is all around me, and you know what that means.

Oh, yes.

to me you are perfect

It’s time for Rick Grimes to show up romantically on your doorstep with a low-tech slide show, folks. It’s time for the greatest Christmas movie ever. It’s time for Love, Actually.

Love Actually

In the spirit of Christmas, and the fact that I have a huge crush on like 70% of this cast, this time around, Trout Nation gets three chances to party. That’s right. I’ll be watching along three times, because this gives me a bullet proof excuse to see this movie three times in twenty-four hours. I’d like to see Mr. Jen argue with me about my alleged “obsession” now. Ha!

Here are the times and dates you can join in:

Saturday, December 14, 9pm EST (UTC -5)

Sunday, December 15, 1am EST (UTC -5)

Sunday, December 15, 3pm EST (UTC -5)

To find out if these times are gonna work for you, visit timeanddate.com. Then start your dvd or digital copy of Love, Actually and tweet to the hashtag #BillyMack.

And remember: this is the best Christmas movie of all time, or I will fight you.

I feel like that scene would have been more touching if she wasn’t actually PERFECT…

I love the cast quite intensely, but I do not think the movie was romantic at all.

How about you watch this and I’ll watch Elf. Deal?

    • I’ll watch both a hundred times between now and Christmas. These two and Ron Burgundy make up most of my December-watch-list. I know, Anchorman has nothing to do with Christmas.

I thought I was the only one that loved this movie so much. I almost peed myself when I saw that it was available for streaming on Netflix.

    • Oh no! I am finding that this movie is pretty much (though not entirely) universally obsessed over.

  7. Um, no. It is NOT the best “Christmas” movie of all time. I disagree vehemently. It is, in fact, the best movie of all time.

I don’t think I ever commented before, but I’ve been a dedicated follower ever since I was recommended your reviews of Fifty Shades.

    Anyways…
I had to say something about this because…. OMG this so is the best Christmas movie ever and I too watch it every Christmas

Too bad I don’t tweet or I’d join in.

  10. Know what I love about this movie so much? Not only does it go over many types of love and lust (Colin was going after sex more than a partner), but the characters aren’t perfect and every single relationship has its challenges, even if a partner in it doesn’t realize.

Also the little girl the little boy is in love with voices Vanessa on one of the greatest shows ever. You know, Phineas & Ferb. 🙂

There is nothing about this movie that I don’t love.

    Some interesting pre-viewing reading:

    http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/12/-em-love-actually-em-is-the-least-romantic-film-of-all-time/282091/

    http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2013/12/06/3034301/love-actually-romantic-comedy-christmas-movie-tragedy/

I still love it, but do think they both have some good points about what’s problematic about it. And given that we all love the Buffy recaps, I think we’re okay with digging into the problems of things we love, yes?

Will try to join in for the last showing – the others are at silly times for me. Thanks for the range of options to accommodate your global fans! 🙂

    • I just read the one from The Atlantic, and it’s spot on. I’ve always kind of thought, though, that the most powerful love story in the movie was between Billy Mack and his “fat manager.” Because it showed a relationship in which both partners were committed to each other, even through hard times, and working toward a goal that ultimately seemed empty if they weren’t sharing it with each other.

I basically wanted them to start making out, rather than pull all that bromance crap.

Oh yeah, I think it’s probably the most poignant – it’s the only story that says something about how sometimes the love in our lives isn’t what we would have expected or wanted, but it’s still of value, even if it takes us a while to realise it.

And they totally should have made out. Someone should write a fanfic.

Ya, that is the only thing I disagreed with in the Atlantic article. I don’t think its fair to say the writers just pinned that romance on at the end to make it fit into the rest of the story. I don’t think that last scene would have been as powerful, or made as much sense if you had seen a continued romance between the two characters throughout the film. It was supposed to be the romance that even the characters weren’t expecting.

I love this movie but agree it has it’s problems. For example, I think it’s moving that Mark is infatuated with a woman he can’t have (Juliet) and the scene with the cards is adorable but also completely inappropriate. He barely knows this married (to his best friend) woman. He crosses so many lines to profess his “love” to her. I’m sorry but I don’t believe you can love someone you don’t really know, nor is it okay to profess your feelings to someone in a committed relationship, let alone that she belongs to someone he considers a friend. IMO, this is the fairy tale aspect of romantic books or movies that turns me off to them. In real life, Mark is a huge jerk!

      • And totally creepy, with that wedding video. It made me super mad that Juliet didn’t have a wedding video because Mark couldn’t not be a creepy perv.

Yes, he’s a dick for the whole low tech slide show to his best friend’s wife.

However, I’m not sure it’s fair to say he barely knows her. She says “Yor always talk to him, never to me”. That implies he hangs out with them both. He must know her fairly well. And sure, he’s a dick for going after her, but she runs out in the street and kisses him full on the mouth. What does that make her?
As forher not having a video.. he was the best man, he had to shoot the video too? Hire a photographer.

I’ll agree they’re acquainted since they have Peter in common, but I still think he barely knows her if he never speaks to her. He knows her in only a second-hand, rather shallow way. There’s nothing to show they hang out regularly. I think the kissing was wrong as was lying to her husband to let him do his card show, but not even in the same category of wrong as Mark professing his love to the wife of his best friend. I think she was being nice to Mark because he cares about her and made this grand gesture but she doesn’t know him either and she’s married and seems to love her husband.

They never asked Mark to film and did hire someone who botched the video. They asked to see what Mark had because they noticed he had filmed during the day.
