Happy Holidays, I got you some hot bisexual billionaires doin’ it.

The Hook-Up is now available at Smashwords.com! *

I want to thank everyone who supported The Boss and The Girlfriend this year. Whether you read it or recommended it or just quietly cheered from the sidelines, your support is so appreciated. And I feel totally inadequate giving you a short story as a token of my gratitude, because I know I should probably be hand-knitting you all really sturdy dish cloths or some other item my grandmother would suggest as a practical and appropriate gift that probably no one would be allergic to.

What I’m trying to say here, Trout Nation, is: “Have this dirty book.”*

*If you do not have a Smashwords.com account, you may be unable to visit the link or download the book. I’m murky on how their adult filter works. If you have troubles, just make an account and click the link again, it should work.

The Hook-Up cover try #1

After cancer put a year of his life on hold, Neil Elwood is finally back where he thought he belonged, at the head of his media empire. But when the job takes him to London and away from his girlfriend, Sophie, he begins to reevaluate his priorities.

Neil isn’t sure what to expect when Sophie suggests a one-on-one night between him and their lover, Emir. When the two men have dinner together, sparks fly, and Neil recognizes a rare opportunity to give sexual submission another try.

Though taking charge is all he knows, Neil is willing to obey, at least for one night. Under Emir’s command, Neil discovers a whole new side of his sexuality, and he learns that sometimes, surrendering control can feel so, so good…

I won’t go into detail here, in case I ruin the story for others, but I just wanted to say that you perfectly encapsulated the fear and anxiety a Dom (this Dom, at least) would feel when subbing. To lose that control and hand it over to another is quite difficult, for a Dom (for anyone, really).

I hate to ask, but is Emir the BDSM equivalent to Jacob (Twilight) and Jose (FSOG)? That’s my impression. I haven’t read The Girlfriend, so I’m not sure how he fits in any of this. Do Sophie and Neil have sex with Emir when they can’t have sex with each other? Are they sharing a boyfriend now? I thought Neil had cancer, didn’t he? I didn’t continue with the series, so I’m a little confused. I want to ask you something, and if you want to answer that would be great. My friends and I were wondering, why doesn’t Sophie have any friends? Her only friends are her bisexual roommate and her bisexual billionaire boyfriend. Why doesn’t she have a social life? Any life? Sophie doesn’t do anything.
Ever. Except have sex with Neil. Why did she get a promotion? So, Neil can keep her at the company? There are other things I would like to ask, but I’ll stop now.

    • Hey, what’s up? Okay, I’ll answer some of your questions here, but I’m not going to answer the one about the cancer, because that’s in The Girlfriend and if someone hasn’t read it yet, I don’t want to be like, “hey, let me spoiler it in the comments.” Emir is someone Sophie and Neil met together at a club, they both like him, and they hook up with him casually twice in The Girlfriend.

As for Sophie having friends, Sophie does have other friends in The Boss. At one point, she has a bunch of them over to celebrate her promotion. I didn’t include that scene in detail, and kept it to a few paragraphs, because I didn’t want to turn this series into the romance equivalent of A Song of Ice and Fire, where nobody can tell anybody apart because there are forty billion characters you sometimes read about only once or twice in five hundred pages. There are already a lot of characters already, LOL. I didn’t want someone to be sitting there thinking, “Um, is that guy from the party who just got his masters degree coming back? Did he get that job, or what?”

Early on in The Boss, Sophie also considers Jake and his girlfriend to be her friends, but as the book progressed and she started seeing him without blinders, obviously she’s not going to stay friends with him. Another reason we don’t see many of Sophie’s interactions with friends is that when she was working for Gabriella, she was working all the time, and reserved as much free-time as possible for her priority #1 friend, Holli. I see Sophie as someone who can easily get caught up with one thing (work, hanging with Holli, her relationship with Neil) and let something else drift away, whether she intends to or not.

As for having sex all the time, well, again, it’s an erotic romance novel, so the focus is going to be on the sexuality and the romance. While there are certainly other things Sophie does in The Boss (off the top of my head, things that were sprinkled in here and there: she runs, she has a standing weekly gym date with Holli, she’s interested in fashion and tailors her own clothes, and she and Holli spend a lot of time watching low-quality tv and movies to amuse themselves), it’s almost always off screen unless another part of plot is happening over the top of it, like the subplot about Holli’s sensitivity over her weight happening while she and Sophie smoke pot and watch Norbit.

The reason she got the promotion was because Gabriella had already planned on promoting her before the take over, and Neil was following along with that. I don’t remember where in that book that’s revealed, but I’m thinking it’s either when Sophie and Neil go to lunch together in an early chapter, or when she’s at lunch with Gabriella near the end.

I just had this weird, out of body moment where I forgot I was talking about MY book, and now I’m MORTIFIED that the comment turned out this long. But it’s the most writing I’ve gotten done all day, so I’m gonna post it, LOL. 😀

Wow, thanks for replying. By the way, I know it’s erotic fiction, so there is going to be a lot of sex. But, what you described doesn’t sound like much of a life. It just seems like he gave her the promotion to keep her at the company. Then, she blesses him by conspiring to sabotage her career, his company and anyone and everyone involved with Porteras. Anyway, I did read The Hook-Up. I thought it was interesting. It felt like a sleepover between two grown men. Two very horny grown men. I love it. Neil just got fucked in the ass by a sad, lonely man; however, he loves Sophie the most. Sure, why not? By the end, I just felt bad for Emir. What is going on with his wife? He seems so needy and starved for attention. Also, he feels like he could become an annoying third wheel. At the very least, Sophie and Neil seem to keep him on stand-by. When they need him; they call on him. Meanwhile, the poor man, is hoping someone wants to spend time with him. It didn’t turn me on. I just wanted to be Emir’s friend. I kinda like him. However, not in this context. Separately, he could be an interesting character. Lastly, Neil should worry about Sophie. She’s not a very thoughtful or reflective character. She’s 24 yrs old. Her youthful exuberance is carelessness, ego, and believing the world owes you favors. Eventually, she’ll grow up. But, he’s already grown up.

Hey, I just wanted to chime in and mention that I hardly spend time with my friends. I have a few close friends that I correspond with regularly but we rarely get together in person. We all have busy lives and families. I’m an introvert and perfectly happy with that level of interaction. Too many social events make me tired. Not everyone needs lots of friends and a busy social life to be happy and fulfilled.

Perhaps Sophie is an introvert. The fact that she likes to relax with one or two friends at a time, or alone in her bath, would support that.

Actually, I feel exactly the same way as Alison, which is why it wouldn’t occur to me that what Pam pointed out might seem odd to some. Particularly when I’m working heavily, I pretty much just want quiet time at home with my man. I have a very small circle of friends I see on infrequent occasions. For those that are more introverted, Sophie’s social life seems perfectly normal. Especially when she’s not from New York originally. If I moved to a new city, I probably wouldn’t have more than a couple of people that I regularly saw, aside from the occasional work get-together.

  20. Earlier today: “oh hey, maybe I’ll just read this Hook Up thing, it’s only short. And I want to see if Neil is based on who I think he is*. I’ll just read that.

“Well that was alright. More than alright. Hey, The Boss is free! Maybe I’ll just read a little…

“Hey, it’s dark. And I’ve missed dinner. Oops. But on the plus side I’ve read most of a whole book.”

Thanks for writing it (and making it free, you’d think it was Christmas), I’m really enjoying it.

      • Well, based on the older English guy thing, and the appearance, and the mannerisms, and the name of your vibrator, I’m guessing it’s Anthony Stewart Head? I was like “maybe…” and then there was a bit about the way he giggles and that was pretty convincing. But I’m obsessed so I’m probably just seeing him everywhere. But I’m still in book 1 so limited evidence.

Even if you say it’s not, for me it always will be him.

I finished The Girlfriend a few days ago and was already feeling the loss of Neil and Sophie in my life. I was sort of hesitant to read this because I knew it wouldn’t involve the two of them directly and they were what made me love the entire story. But I LOVED it. As much as it was hot (seriously), what really drew me were Neil’s inner thoughts about Sophie. It was great getting into his head and seeing him in a sort of nervous, hesitant way we don’t really get to see in The Boss or The Girlfriend. I also loved that even while involved in this super sexy time with Emir, his thoughts still revolved around Sophie in such a big way. This just made me all that much more excited about the third book. When is it coming out again??!

Someone suggested that this was Twilight and FSOG combined and I realized it is. It really is. This is just the adult version of the three. The characters are the same; just different variations of one another. Bella and Ana didn’t get to have sex with their Emir. However, Sophie did. In this story, so did Edward and Christian. Is this how to solve love triangles? Valerie is the same as Tanya (Twilight), and Elena (FSOG). Does that mean Renesmee, Ana and Christian’s baby, and Emma are the same? I love Emma and I wish the story had more of her. I like her sarcasm, cheeky sense of humor and biting wit. She should have been the female protagonist. And, she delivers the best lines. However, as much as I liked The Hook-Up, I am getting tired of the same story repeating itself. It is always two guys and one girl. As per usual, the boyfriend is insecure about the other guy and the girlfriend is unaware of everything around her. Why not a woman? Really, why not? Is it supposed to be more interesting to have two men fucking the same girl? Let’s see how Sophie would feel if Neil had a female lover. But Sophie is supposed to be so cool, right? She wouldn’t care.

    • I’m sorry, I just literally imagined Renesmee, Ana and Christian’s baby, and Emma all fused into this flesh pile with a random arm sticking out, pulling itself in a slime trail across the floor and whispering, “Kiiiiiiill me…”

It’s funny, because until you started pointing it out, I didn’t realize how many characters in my stuff do line up with the characters in 50 Shades. I’m alarmed at some of the unintentional stuff, like someone pointed out Neil gives Sophie a Led Zeppelin Icarus t-shirt to wear. I thought I was doing that because I had an Icarus t-shirt that I lost when I moved… but why did I think of *THAT* specific t-shirt when I was writing it? Why not the R.E.M. t-shirt I got on the Monster tour? Did I think of Icarus because of Christian Grey?

And then I got thinking about Emir. I literally put him in the book because I saw a picture of this model and I was like, “I wanna fuck that guy. I know, I’ll put him in a book!” But why in a way that eerily mirrors Twilight/50SoG? And why did I think it was my idea, if it was influence by those books? We know why it happened in 50 Shades, because it was written as Twific and specifically mirrored the book as an AU rewrite.

On the other hand, I can look at a lot of different romances that came out before those two books and have the same set ups, with the love triangle, the perceived female threat, the cast of side characters… holy shit, my first book was even like that. The Southern Vampire novels fit that mold, too. And Anita Blake, back when she was a vampire hunter and not a vampire fucker.

Is this the formula for single title romance in any subgenre? I kind of hope it is, because otherwise 50 Shades has gotten into my brain and something is very weird in there now.

As for Sophie’s acceptance of Neil being with a woman, simmer down, we’re getting there, LOL.
