New Year, New Goals

Posted in Uncategorized

The other day on Tumblr, I saw a post that accurately sums up my feelings on New Year’s Resolutions. Here’s a link to the original source, which I highly recommend checking out.

Anyway, it got me thinking. Every year for the past, oh, twenty or so years, my New Year’s Resolution has always been “lose weight.” Everyone’s is. Even some years I didn’t particularly feel like losing weight, or didn’t even need to lose any weight, I made that my resolution, and then I sat back and did nothing because tee hee, no one actually sticks to that.

This year, I’m like, fuck it. This is the year I make some resolutions that are fun and which interest me enough to stick to:

  1. This is the year that I knit the 4th Doctor’s scarf. I’ve always wanted that scarf, but until a few years ago, I never knew how to knit. And you can’t reasonably ask another person to knit you a twelve foot long scarf. I’m going to use the instructions at wittylittleknitter.com and www.doctorwhoscarf.com to do the job. If any of you are knitting the Doctor’s scarf in the New Year, let us know in the comments. If there are enough of us, I’ll do “report your progress” posts.
  2. Spend more time doing fun stuff. I work. A lot. I know I’m always on Twitter and Tumblr, but that’s actually while I’m working. I’m a strange creature. Sometimes I write a sentence, then hit Tumblr, then go back to the writing. Sometimes I write in day long chunks. In June of 2013, on a writing retreat, I wrote 10k in one day, and ended up in the emergency room the next morning with the worst muscle tension headache of my life. I don’t want to do that again. And I’m tired of feeling stressed out if my family and their needs take me away from writing. I wrote 400k in 2013. That’s not how it’s supposed to be. In 2014, I’m going to shift my priorities and stop writing like I’m trying to keep a ship from sinking.
  3. Give myself permission to have a less than perfect house. If I want to play video games instead of loading the dishwasher, that’s fine. I’m going to stop worrying about the state of my house, so long as it’s not overtly gross, because I’m not a servant. If my family doesn’t like it, they can chip right in and pick up after themselves. Besides, no one ever stops by when the house is clean, anyway. Only when it’s been utterly destroyed in a single hour because the kids decided to eat popcorn while playing with Legos on laundry day.
  4. Wear a bikini. This isn’t a weight loss goal, because I don’t intend to lose weight to achieve it. I’m going to wear a bikini this year. Anyone who has an issue with a fat woman in a bikini can look the other way.

Those are my resolutions. What are yours?

I love the idea of knitting the 4th Doctor’s scarf, that is awesome! I don’t know how to knit, but looking forward to seeing your progress. I don’t make resolutions, I pick a word to describe things I want to do. Since I didn’t totally finish with last years word, I chose “continue” for my word this year. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Continue is my word–continue to lose weight, continue to get this stuff out of my house we don’t need or use, continue to move forward. Last year my word was “minimalism”–so I’m just trying to keep that idea in mind through another year.

  2. I’ve knit two 4th doctor scarves and have a third about 75% complete (currently abandoned, because knitting garter stitch in acrylic yarn is just not an exciting knitting project for me at the moment). The key thing with getting a really good 4th doctor scarf is to get the colors right – the doctorwhoscarf.com website has really good guidelines. You need to get the correct shade of green, a blue-ish charcoal for the gray, and preferably a heathered natural/cream color for the white. I see scarves all the time that have the wrong shades of yarn, and it just doesn’t look right in the finished project.

The other thing to realize is that the overall length of the scarf when you finish knitting will NOT be 12 feet – it will probably be about 7-8 feet and will then stretch to much longer as you wear it.

Maybe one of my 2014 goals will be completing the lackluster scarf that is 75% complete!

    • Oh, I’m certain it won’t be an exciting project, LOL.

The pattern I’m looking at should finish out at 8ft before blocking… as to how one blocks a scarf that’s 8ft long, I’m going to have to visit the “tips” section.

I blocked my S12 (which was a little over 2.2 metres finished) using my clothes airing rack which has a central section designed to hold hangers with shirts on. The top bar is over 2.3 metres from the ground so I hung the scarf over it, clipped together the open ends and put a bar through the bottom of the loop formed thusly. Add small wieghts to each end of the bar and spray water on the scarf as it stretches, rotate the loop so no one section is more stretched than another. Final length 4.1 metres. Yayyy!

My mom crocheted this one beautiful, but HUGE table cloth. Like 144″ long. They have an enormous antique dining table. Anyway she blocks that in sections and it always looks perfect when she’s done.

Does it matter? Not to me, I don’t mind just writing as a hobby, but my friends don’t seem to understand that writing doesn’t equal publishing. But in the end, it is my name on the cover, unless I come up with a cool pseudonym ;-), and my decision.

As a long-time knitter, I wish all of you the best of luck with The Garter Stitch And Stripes Scarf That Never Ends…erm, your Fourth Doctor scarves. There’s a kit out there from Simply Sock Yarn Co. that’s gorgeous, but it’s still not motivating me to try it.

I do the One Little Word thing, too. We’re coming to the end of my year focused on “content”, which was a complete and total bust. 2014 is going to be “create” – I need to get back to writing, knitting, making all the crafty things, and, quite frankly, creating my own happiness instead of leaning on others to prop me up all the time. If I think I look like a million bucks? I create my own image, and I’m over what anyone else says. If that means I wear a lot of heavy glitter eyeliner to work, so be it. 🙂 I’m also (finally, after a 20 year journey) getting my bachelor’s degree, so I sort of have to create my own destiny from here on out…having a major life goal like that achieved is very disorienting!

    Happy New Year!!

  7. Awesome resolutions, and I can’t wait to see how the scarf turns out! =^_^=

    My resolutions are:

Move into my own apartment. Because right now I live with my parents and while I do love them…I need my own place for many reasons!
Masturbate more frequently. And get my own vibrator.
Spend more time doing fun things and being creative.
Do a better job of keeping in touch with friends.
Update my YouTube channel more frequently. Because I fell into a bit of a hiatus over the holidays and I didn’t like that.

I’ll probably make more, but those are the highest priority resolutions.

  8. I love your resolutions for 2014! The Dr Who scarf – wonderful. Have fun with it!
I especially like res # 3 – “Give myself permission to have a less than perfect house.” My mother had a trivet she hung on the wall that said, “Come in, sit down, relax, converse. The house doesn’t always look like this, sometimes it is even worse.” I loved that. There is a sampler that says, “If you come to see me, come anytime. If you come to see my house, make an appointment.” I have lived by both. So much less stressful!
You are so brave to want to wear a bikini! Strut your stuff! Love it!
My resolutions? I never learned to be look ahead and goal set or plan. Actually something that has been on the list before and never been accomplished. Maybe I should do it again. Learn how to set goals and achieve them. In the mean time, you are an inspiration. Thank you!

I did the bikini one! It was great, no one cared that I was not skinny. Except when I got dumped by a wave and the bottom got filled up with sand. That bit wasn’t so great.

According to the “guys who take a lot of notice of this kind of stuff” over at the facebook group page Stitches in Time, Osgood’s scarf is actually a k1p1 rib. The backstory being that Osgood was a fangirl who made it herself in tribute to Tom Baker.

I think they’ve now finished transcribing the pattern – from obsessively watching and re-watching the programme – and it’s amazing to see how much effort these fellers put into their cosplay. If I didn’t hate rib so much I might be tempted to try it myself.

      • Those guys are wrong. At the beginning of the episode, when the Doctor first arrives, Osgood looks like she’s waiting for him to recognize her. Then he says, “Nice scarf.” This is because he does recognize her. He’s met her before. Later, when Osgood is being attacked by the Zygon, she says, “Save me Doctor.” She’d seemingly *just* met the Doctor, but her pleas seem personal, like she knows he’s going to save her. Then, when the Zygon is standing on the scarf and she jerks it from under its feet, the Doctor *has* saved her.

The 4th Doctor. Osgood was a companion of the 4th Doctor, and he gave her the scarf to save her from the Zygons later. Presumably because he’s still in gallery, working as the Curator, and he knew she would need saving from the Zygon.

How he got to be the Curator, I’m still working out. Maybe when the Doctor jumped back in his own timeline, he split it somehow.

But those cosplay geeks can suck it, because Osgood was a companion, and the scarf is the wrong stitch because obviously 4 had more than one. NERRRRRRRRD RAAAAAAAAAGE INTENSIFIES!

Ah well, k1 p1 looks like stockinette because the fabric pulls in on itself. It’s still wrong. I thought maybe the character made the scarf herself as a tribute to the doctor but never actually met him.

    • I reject the idea of the Doctor returning to a different version of an older regeneration, because as we’ve seen so far, only Time Ladies can control the form of their regenerations. I hold steadfast that his timeline was somehow split by Clara’s actions in The Name of The Doctor.

This is in keeping with my other current fan theory, that the Great Intelligence is the end result of another of the Doctor’s incarnations that spun off into an alternate timeline when the Doctor entered his own time stream.

HA HA who am I kidding? Moffat is still steering this ship straight to hell, so we all know that the plot is just going to end up being something to do with a magical girl.

Given that the not 4th doctor said to 11, that he will become a curator, and that he revisits faces, he just HAS to be a future regen.

The Doctor Who scarves look awesome, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make one. I basically only knit while I’m watching TV, because it keeps me from biting my nails. This means that I literally only know one way of knitting – the easiest one. The one where you don’t have to pay any attention to what you’re doing.

    Hi Jenny,

Love your stuff! And many thanks for slogging through the heap of steaming excement that was FSOG so that we didn’t have to. You are one strong-minded person and I salute you!

The 4th Doctor scarf is a lovely project. I knitted one (a Season 12) for my brother for his birthday back in June. It is lovely mindless knitting, great for in front of the telly. As we don’t have any of the yarn brands they mention on doctorwhoscarf.com here in Australia, I got my wool (and yes, this is a project that deserves to be knitted in proper wool!) from Bendigo Woollen Mills by mail order. While I got the 7 colours as close as I could I wasn’t able to get the khaki green so went for a darker more forest green shade. He loves it anyway (he’s a Year 11 English teacher and wears it to school at every opportunity) and got asked to pose for a photo at a recent carols event. While it’s a nice thought to have the colours as close to authentic as possible, in the end it’s your scarf so do it the Trout way!

I hope your 2014 is everything you want it to be.

I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions, but I’ve made some good headway learning Thai over the past week, and I want to keep that momentum up when school starts again on Monday. I also need to not lose my Spanish in the process, so I’ve committed to reading one Spanish novel per month minimum. So, since coming up with those goals has, by chance, coincided with New Year’s Eve, I suppose those are my resolutions.

May I put in an official request right here? After you’ve finished doing the Buffy rewatch, can you do a NuWho re watch? Or how about a Sherlock rewatch? Something for the UK state of Trout nation!

    • Oh man. You know, I would love to do a NuWho rewatch, but it would break my heart to critically dissect the Moffat years. I see stuff and I wince. 🙁

Sherlock might be a good one, since there aren’t as many episodes and my Moffat hate will be somewhat restrained. Although I’m a big nerd about the actual Sherlock stories, I’m less so than I am about Doctor Who.

I will be doing a Merlin thing in 2014, with two other bloggers. I’m not sure how we’re structuring it exactly, or when it starts, but the plan is for all three of us to post our takes on each episode. It won’t be a full-scale recap like the Buffy ones, but I think it’s gonna be pretty good.

I’m re watching Sherlock, was pleasantly surprised at how well the very first episode stood up plot-wise considering it was Moffat. You know, he USED to be good. See if you can find a DVD of a series from many, many moons ago called Joking Apart, it was fantastic. And it had ‘too old for Edith’ Lord Wotsit from Downton in it.

  16. I bought string for a Four scarf, but wanted to scale it down a tiny bit since I’m not 6’4″. But I also dislike maths, so I bought lighter-weight yarn (fingering weight) and planned to knit the pattern for sport/DK/light worsted from doctorwhoscarf.com on smaller needles. I did sixty-odd rows and decided I didn’t like it and would rather do sport weight after all. But I have all this fingering weight string. So I’m using the color chart for the season 12.5 scarf to make stockings. Not socks. Not knee socks. Stockings. I will be needing a garter belt. It’s one of my favorite projects ever. For colors I used the doctorwhoscarf.com recommendations for Brown Sheep and Jamiesons – I chose the darker green because I thought too dark would be better than too vivid. I made the right call for me on that one. The saddle tan for the lightest stripe is more saturated than I’d like – when I do my Scarf Proper I think I will use one of the KnitPicks heathers – probably Camel Heather. I’m reserving judgement on the Brown Sheep in Stone for the gray. Hope that will maybe help others scarfing to get the color versions they want.

Now, Jenny (May I call you Jenny? ‘Cause I’m gonna.) about Osgood’s scarf… Nooooooo! Osgood is clearly a Doctor fangirl, possibly a second-generation one (remember Sergeant Osgood?) She’s young, but she’s clever, so it would make sense for her to have been at UNIT for quite a while even of she’s not 2nd generation. Not like UNIT would balk at recruiting a teenager if she has the skills they need. (Personally I think that it makes most sense for her to be Sgt. Osgood’s relative – maybe daughter, maybe niece, cousin, someone who grew up hearing tales of the Doctor.)

And she learned to knit, I’m guessing recentishly (or learned as a child and picked it up again recently) and when we learn to knit we usually want to make a Thing we’re excited about. Such as, say, our hero’s trademark scarf. Because she’s a new/returning knitter she didn’t spot the garter stitch (or alternatively she did spot it but didn’t want to do that many knit stitches in a row forever and decided on 1×1 rib.) The colors are off in hue because she’d be working from UNIT archive stills/probably grainy video. I’m also basing her recent knitter status on her choice to work in acrylic, but I’m willing to concede that point on the grounds that I’m an inveterate yarn snob and lots of people of much higher skill than me choose acrylic for good and valid reasons of their own. So, having completed our first major Thing as knitters what do we do? We wear hell out of the Thing. My first Thing was a Slytherin house scarf and I wore it everywhere. So she’d have her Scarf near to hand, and when the call came in that they were airlifting in the TARDIS she either grabbed it so it could meet the Doctor, too, or just didn’t realize she had it on because it had become second nature to wear it. (Because sometimes that happens – I have a couple of hats like that.)

I don’t think the Curator is part of Four’s original generation – I accepted his revisiting faces explanation. Although now you mention it the Doctor is a lying liar who lies. And that would explain his apparent lack of TARDIS for purposes of freezing Gallifrey – if he were separate wouldn’t he have been out there, too? Hmm. But I’m still not on board with Osgood knowing the Curator as the Doctor. The “the Doctor will save me” chant seemed a lot more like a child comforting herself than “this person I know has the skills to deal with this.” And if she’s mostly in a lab it makes sense that she wouldn’t necessarily have a lot of first-hand experience with hostile aliens. So when faced with Zygons her memories of personal accounts of fighting monsters would be most relevant, with associated saving via Doctor. Then when the Zygon finally corners her we see adult Osgood snapping into focus and saving HERSELF so she can go help the others, including the Doctor(s). So, um, yeah. That’s a lot of words. Hi! happy new year!

    • By the way, do you ever have Thoughts about Three and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart? So much flirting.

      • In general, I ship Three with just about everyone. But I’ve always thought it was especially weird that he never went back and saw him before he died (although, I always find it weird on a show about time travel that the Doctor never goes back and sees people after they’ve died. “Oh, but it will change history!” Yeah, but… the Doctor NEVER does that, amiright?)

Anyway, I think there was something there, and the Doctor didn’t go back to see him because there was unseen history. *waggles eyebrows* If you know what I mean.

  17. Good luck with your resolutions Jenny and Trout Nation members! My resolutions are to try and be healthier somehow as 2013 was marred by a lot of injuries and mishaps, to get a kickarse job as I haven’t been able to job hunt until now (because of resolution #3) and to really enjoy living in this new location with my awesome husband. I guess this year is the year I really want to come into my own as a grown up hehe.

      • Awwww thanks. I’ve talked them up but when you really look at them my resolutions are basically: go for a run here and there, find gainful employment and go to the pub more.

  18. My resolutions are to save more money & to finish writing & publish 3 out of the 4 books I’m working on. In a perfect world, I’d get all four out, but I’m trying to be realistic.

  19. I don’t do resolutions ever, I just kind of think of things I’d like to do.

    The bikini…
I love that thing that goes:
“How to get a bikini body: Put a bikini on your body.”
    That’s the best.

    • Hit post before I was ready of course.

Also was going to say, I know this wouldn’t go over well with some folks, but I used to call any unusually long scarf a Doctor Who scarf no matter what the colors.

I still have one my mom knit where something went wrong, and I think she thought it would shrink and it didn’t, but anyway, it’s not even striped, but a marled pattern, and it has been my “Doctor Who” scarf for over 20 years now.

    so…for what it’s worth:

My New year’s resolutions are as follows:
    1. Drink more. SO this is for real. I have really low HDL cholesterol (the good stuff) and studies show that moderate alcohol consumption can increase it. I did this a few years ago and went from 32 to 59 without changning anything else. Bring on the booze. Ish…I don’t like drinking that much. So it is actually a little tough.

    2. Work on discipline. Essentially the goal is to listen that little voice that speaks in ‘shoulds.’ You should do the laundry, you should work out, you should get upright sometime today.

    3. And finally, not really a resolution, but last year we did a detox diet for February and I felt amazing. So we’re doing it again, but it is strict as fuck, so I have to gear up to it.

  21. I crocheted the 4th Doctor’s scarf back in 09/10, for an ex-boyfriend. (Didn’t know how to knit well enough to do it, at the time.) Had to frog it and restart about 5 times because of uneven width (a danger with crochet) but eventually managed to keep it an even 1 foot wide throughout. Ended up being 16 feet long, with fringe.

I regret not taking it from him when he cheated on me.

    Anyway.

I have one resolution, and several goals. The resolution: to be true to myself. Nothing else matters if I don’t stay true to my deepest self. The goals (and an elaboration on my resolution) are listed here (way too many to put in a comment): http://amoebakat.wordpress.com/2013/12/31/bring-it-on-2014/

Though I may end up knitting a 4th Doctor scarf along with you, as well. For myself, this time. (It totally depends on if I ever have the couple-hundred dollars I’ll need for the yarn.)

    My resolutions are:
    1. Get to the pool once a week (I’m a wheelchair user, so I can only do exercise in water)
    2. Lose weight. I’ve gained about 15kg since I became disabled and I’d like to lose 7-8kg of that. It’s particularly irritating because I had lost 4kg of that weight and I’ve put it back on.
    3. Write my novel, which is an idea that’s been floating around in my head for 5 years.
    4. And properly plot out the sequels!
    5. Go to some kind of evening class, my brain has turned to mush in the last two years since I had to quit uni/work.

  23. Ooooohh…the 4th Doctor scarf! I can’t wait to see your scarf in progress.

    My resolutions/goals for 2014?

–Cross-stitch on a daily basis. One of my favorite hobbies, and it’s a great stress reliever too (even if I have to frog a bunch of stitches). I have a bunch of UFOs (UnFinished Objects) that I want to complete.
–Crochet snowflake ornaments. My mother had made a lot of snowflake ornaments when I was a child and they were hung on the Christmas tree or in windows every year. She died 4 years ago, and I can’t find them.
–Take care of myself! Whether it’s losing weight, or stop picking at my adult acne, or whatever. I’ve been a nurse for 20 years, and I’ve fallen into that trap of taking care of everyone and putting myself last.
–Make a list of all the books I read in 2014. I’ve never done that before, and I’m curious to see how many I read and the different genres.

Have a Happy New Year 2014 everyone…make it so!

As crap as goodreads can be, using their yearly challenge might be a good way for you to track your reading? I’m aiming for forty books this year. I failed my challenge of fifty last year (by two!) because I read too many blogs! They log genres and stuff for you too. Good luck!

Do you have links to the patterns you used? My family had some growing up as well that I would like to recreate at some point. I remember small starched ones as tree ornaments.

Your resolutions are super-cool (which is only to be expected from someone as kick-ass as you). I look forward to seeing progress on the scarf. I knitted a 10ft scarf for my partner once (not with the strict pattern/colour progression of the doctor scarfs though) and it was a fun project for sitting in front of mindless TV.

    My resolutions this year are:
    1) Lose weight – I’m 4 stone into medical obesity, and it has to stop.
    2) Break up with my boyfriend – it sounds harsh, but the relationship is doing neither of us any good.
    3) Win the mother-lovin Euromillions goddammit!!

PS, you are super brave on wearing a bikini …. I’ve never worn one, even when I only weighed 9stone!

A few years ago I resolved not to make any New Year resolutions, and this is not the year I’m going to break that. It’s the only resolution I’ve ever managed to keep, which is kinda the point.

Love some of these ideas though, and the ones you linked to. 🙂

    Happy New Year, everyone!

  28. I’m going to draw more. I’m going to do lots of fanart, maybe take commissions. I’ll study and finish my major. I’ll sing, maybe enter a choir, but if not I’ll be just singing with my friend and uploading to some site.
