THANK YOU TWEEPS!

Posted in Uncategorized

Do you ever have one of those moments where you think, “I should do [x] before [y] happens,” and then, before you can do anything else, [y] happens and you’re like, “Fuck you, self. Why didn’t you warn me in time?”

Last night, I lost all of The Girlfriend and The Stranger.
Through the help of my miracle tweeps, I was able to recover all of The Girlfriend and 3,000 words of The Stranger, which had been sitting at 17k, but I’ll take what I can get!
Thank you so much to everyone who talked me through this on Twitter all night long. I was up until six in the morning trying to save The Stranger, but ultimately I had to give up. However, when you guys are reading The Girlfriend, be sure to thank your lucky stars for Twitter user I Am The Liquor, who saved every piece of it.
I’m about to throw I Am The Liquor a goddamned parade, LOL!

  1. I opened a Gmail account just for my writing. I email everything to it whenever I make a change, just in case of something like this. So glad you got it back! Well, most of it, anyway. 🙂

You should give I am the liquor The Boss early. I know I would pretty much pay any amount of money to not have to wait an entire week between chapters. I thought of starting a book review blog just to get an ARC. I am not a patient person. And I tend to prefer reading things in longer stretches.

  5. I had that happen. Thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Celtic fairy tail, 53,000 words… computer met a fiery death that smelt of burnt wires. Had no backup, other than a cd that had the first three chapters. Had to rewrite everything. I called it practice.

    That kind of practice sucks.

Now I back up EVERYTHING. Got a thumb drive? Save all your work on it, rather than the hard drive. That way if the computer fails, your work is safe!

So glad you didn't lose everything. Huzzah and yay I Am The Liquor!

  6. Thumb drives die. Had it happen to me. Plugged it in one day and nada.

Thankfully, my above-mentioned special email account. 🙂

You can send me copies and I promise not to do anything nefarious with them. 😛

  8. This is why google drive is a great thing. Easy to use and you can quickly save things periodically.Google products are pretty great.

  9. Google Drive was part of the problem, actually. It had been listing folders as synched. When I went to retrieve my files, there was nothing in the folders. Since May 1st, it had only synched the folders, not the contents of those folders. 🙁

  11. I usually do back up my stuff on a thumb drive, but I was trusting google drive a little too much and I hadn't updated my saved writing file on the thumb drive in a long time. 🙁

  14. Oh man. I know that feeling; I've felt it twice. The first time, a hard drive died and a lot of stuff was just completely lost. I still have the hard drive because I can't bring myself to throw it away, although it would be pretty expensive to even try to get it to work. The second time I lost a complete MS, but I had been emailing it back and forth with a critique partner, so it's still in my email, waiting for me to redo the whole thing. I'm glad you got at least some of your work back.

Ohmygod. You are amazing for getting through all of that without losing your mind! I am a former newspaper journalist (had to quit working because of disability), and I once lost a three-part story that was the longest piece of journalistic writing I'd ever done. I'd only backed up about half of it when I lost it. I was a few sentences away from finishing the whole thing when it disappeared into the black hole of the Interwebs.

I really thought I was going to die. It was so awful. Mine was only about 10,000 words, so I lost about 5,000 words. I can't even imagine losing as many words as you did.

The story ends well. The second time around, I was happier with what I wrote. So even though it took more time, it ended up being a better piece of writing. It's still one of the best pieces I've written, I think.

I'm so terribly sorry this happened to you. Especially right after dealing with food poisoning! When it rains, it pours, huh? I hope things get better for you instead of worse.

Also, I'm so glad you're back from the land of food poisoning. I now catch myself checking your blog every morning and evening to see if you've posed anything new. 🙂 I came for the 50 Shades of Grey recaps, and I stayed because I enjoy ALL of your writing. The Boss is, hands-down, the best erotica writing I've ever read. And it is such a good response to all that is wrong with 50SoG. You're an amazing writer, and I'm so glad I found you.

  16. I keep my main copies on a thumb drive. I don't always have my laptop and I don't always have Internet access. So what I have written is always on that little device, but after every writing session, the second I have Internet, it gets e-mailed. It works out well, too, because I also always have every version available if I need to mine something. 🙂

  17. That's awful, I was going to suggest google drive. I wonder why it was only syncing the folder?
