The link doesn't work.
Thanks for the heads up! I will fix it post haste!
This is a bit off topic, but I thought you might get a kick out of it.
I was looking for books in Spanish to load on my Kindle, and one of the books I saw as I browsed was the Spanish translation of FSoG. I decided to try the sample to see if the bad writing style was preserved in translation. I don't know if it's a compliment to the translators' integrity or an insult to their writing ability to say that yes, it was.
The tie still has unruly hair and stares at Ana.
The language even awkwardly shifts between the Spanish I'm used to here in California and the Spanish I have to accustom myself to every time I go to Spain.
On the plus side, some of the weird mismatches of phrases James used were fixed in the translation. I think one in English went something like “I floor the pedal to the metal” (I remember you quoting it in your first recap; I've never read the book); nothing that bizarre exists in the Spanish translation. Most likely the translators threw up their hands in bewilderment and went with the much more reasonable “I accelerated.” Other than a few of those instances, though, the bad writing is intact with all its pointless repetition, bad characterization, and ponderously slow pace.
To bring this back on topic, I'll say that none of those bad qualities exist in the first three chapters of the Boss (which, honestly, wouldn't be a cause for celebration a few years ago since until then it was *expected* that published authors be able to, you know, write).
🙂
