The “Force Jess To Finally Watch Labyrinth” watch-a-long!

Posted in Uncategorized

If you were a youngster in the 80’s, there is a very high likelihood that one movie, and one movie alone, caused you to first be aware of the power of raw, forbidden sexuality.

LabyrinthBallroomscene

Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, a monument to fantasy, puppetry, and snugly packed male genitalia was the movie that made me first aware of the hotness of age gap dynamics. Bronwyn Green and I love this movie. We even have this friendship test for new people we meet: if someone doesn’t like Labyrinth, it is unlikely that we will have much else in common.

So imagine our horror when we found out that Jessica Jarman has never, ever, in her entire life, seen Labyrinth.

This is a situation that must be rectified. What better way than with a Twitter watch-a-long. And what better time than to celebrate David Bowie’s 68th birthday?

The “Force Jess To Finally Watch Labyrinth” watch-a-long!

Thursday, January 8th, at 9 P.M. EST

Hashtag: #MagicBulge

Hop on Netflix or start your DVD (or VHS. You know you own it on one of those formats) at 9 P.M. EST and tweet to the hashtag #MagicBulge. We can all share our fond memories of the vague discomfort caused by David Bowie’s tights.

You can’t fail if you haven’t seen it! The test is if you don’t like the Labyrinth. You don’t fail until you’ve seen it and then don’t like it, which I’m sure will be impossible.

  3. Considering creating a Twitter just for this event. Delicious, delicious Bowiebulge.

They have his costume at a museum here in Seattle, BTW. Yes, the tights are bulgy on the mannequin too.

*sigh* I almost wish I tweeted – just for this. *sigh* Hmm the “magic bulge.* The music wasn’t bad either. Funny thing is, my 34 year daughter and I were just discussing watching this again. Must be something in the air. *grin*

Ah, Legend was my intro to, uh, all sorts of naughty feels. Just saying Tim Curry in furry pants and headgear? It’s a fascinating mix, better than Tom Cruise in sequins and tights.

Also, should be noted that my daughter and I do the spiel.

“You remind me of the babe.”
      “What babe?”
      “The babe with the power.”
      “What power.”
      “The power of voodoo!”
      “Who do?”
      “You do!”
      “Do what?”
      “Remind me of the babe!”

My much-much-younger sisters are 14 and 19. I bought them Labyrinth for Xmas this year after the youngest offhandedly asked, “Who’s David Bowie? ” They’ve apparently watched it SEVERAL times already.

We did this same test on all potential friends but the movie we use is The Dark Crystal. Labyrinth is a great choice too! Time to dust off these old classics, and Legend too!

I must have watched this movie 200 times the year I was seven. Everything the entire rest of the world tried to tell my about gender roles was completely overwritten by this movie, in which girls go on quests and boys stay home and do their hair.

I’m proud to say that I have worn out 2 copies of Labyrinth in two different formats. The magnetic tape of my childhood VHS completely wore out, and my dvd copy stopped working.

Incidentally, just two months ago, I went to watch my latest dvd copy, when I accidentally snapped the dvd in half trying to get it out of the case 🙁 I

You know, after my first visit to your webpage I was pretty sure we could be friends based solely on your voice. Now that I know you’re a Labyrinth / David Bowie fan, I’m totally sure of it.
