State of The Trout: “Stuff that’s happening” edition

Posted in Uncategorized

Hey there Troutlanders. OMG THAT IS WHAT WE SHOULD CALL OURSELVES IF WE ARE IN TROUT NATION BUT ALSO WE LOVE OUTLANDER.

Ahem. Speaking of Outlander, I received this awesome box just before Christmas:

I won it through a twitter contest and I’m fucking stoked about it, but I don’t think there’s been a State of The Trout post where I could share it. There is a kilt in the box. I’m going to see Mr. Jen in a kilt. ROWR.

Chapter eleven of The Afflicted is up. You can read it here.

Speaking of favorite fandoms: This is my very new tattoo, moments after the artist (Katrina Kateri, Old Anchor Tattoos, Portage, MI) finished it:

D-Rock took that picture. She said, “Dude, you look so tough now.” I think the puppy on my stripey sweater agrees. Doctor Who tattoos make you look hard as fuck.

Want another free read? My New Adult novella, Choosing You, is free on Amazon until January 17th. This story was originally included in the If Ever I Would Leave You anthology from last year.

My next book release, you ask? I’ll have a contemporary romance novella, Bad Boy, Good Man, in the Bad Boy Next Door digital box set. More details to come.

More writing in general? As part of a blogging thing, expect to see occasional posts inspired by songs and photographs. The Wednesday Bloggers came up with the idea. I’ll basically be writing fanfic of my own stuff, so you’ll be getting micro-stories about characters that are already out there.

I was quoted in the NYT! In an absolute first for me, I was quoted in a major national publication. The article is about Meghan Trainor, and the author references my objections to the cultural appropriation in the video.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print!

WOO! KILT! my husband has two kilts, and they’re definitely the best thing ever. they need to be a more common clothing item. or maybe not, as so many women would “accidentally” lose their pants?

i totally got your book for free. money is tighter than a hipster’s jeans right now, but i still love to read! FREE BOOKS FOREVER. i’d throw money at you if i had it, though, because i love you.

doctor who tattoos are totally badass. i’ve been planning a full sleeve space tattoo with a TARDIS and the enterprise (the 1701-D, of course). hopefully it will make me look half as hard as you!

Phhhhh….. I thought hard before posting. Outlander is a horrible book. Rape culture much? I was recommended it by a work colleague who basically peed herself describing it.I tried until Jamie teaches Claire a ‘lesson’. Please I hope no apologists counter this. As a Scottish woman, I hope none of my friends would forgive a man just because he looks good in a kilt and has lovely red curls. BARF! This is not BDSM mutual consent and those who slag off 50SOG should also think on this, how amazing that the same applies; millionaire can be a douchebag, exotic redhead in kilt can be a douchebag also.

Outlander the TV show is doing SUCH a better job of presenting the sex, though, so I think it’s going to look a lot better on screen (just like I think the sex in 50 Shades is going to seem a lot better without Ana’s internal thoughts). No matter what the author says, Outlander is very much like the historical romance genre as it was when the book first came out: old school rapemances.

But obviously, IT’S NOT A HISTORICAL ROMANCE NOVEL (TM). Because DG is NOT a fan of romance, despite writing it.

I have heard good things about the TV show, but despite it being filmed here, with some Scottish arts funding, no mainstream network has picked it up. Our tourism and heritage organisations are clapping their hands in glee though, and I spoke to a member of staff at Doune Castle who read the first three books to keep up with all the fan questions. If it brings folks here I guess that’s something. DG was at the Edinburgh Book festival in the summer and was a sell out. I do wish I could see the TV show at least once. The woman who plays Claire is very attractive, and strong-looking. Finally, the rumour-mill said that no UK channel picked it up last year because the government didn’t want to inflame a YES vote for Scottish independence!

Being an avid fan of the Outlander series I’m not going to even consider denying that rape is a frequent theme in the series. I’ve made the mistake of recommending the series to friends without letting on that there are some scenes in the books that were actually painful for me to read and the result of those recommendations was less than I had hoped for.
But the scene being referenced has one major difference from how abuse is depicted in 50sog, that being that Claire asserts her control over what happens to her at the hand of her husband, and he accepts that. He doesn’t make an empty promise. There are no qualifiers. And he keeps his word.
Do I cringe during various other scenes? Without a doubt. But rape isn’t glorified. It’s a part of the story and the experience of the characters. It has never been considered acceptable by the protagonist even when other characters engage in sexual abuse or threaten abuse as a means of controlling Claire.
