Yes, I did see 50 Shades of Grey, thanks for asking.

Posted in Uncategorized

Last night, I went and saw 50 Shades of Grey. I have feelings. Feelings that are going to be explored more in-depth in some vlogs I’ve done with @ThatMissQuin (her feed is NSFW), and with a review I’ll be posting tomorrow or Friday, if I can’t handle my emotions.

In the meantime, I did live tweet the movie, and I’ve Storifyed (Storified?) it to tide you over until I can deliver more Shades shade.

  1. You know, I seriously hate when people have their phones out during movie for texting or whatever, even if they’re silent, because the light is distracting if you’re sitting behind the person.

But this I support. 🙂 Can’t wait to see your post about it. I can’t bring myself to go. I’m curious, but those people aren’t getting my money. I’m also concerned I might throw up.

    • If your phone is any good, you can turn the light waaayyyy down to just barely visible. Hopefully she did that. 🙂

I watched it. I wasn’t going to but I figured, I subjected myself to the books (made SO much less painful by your blog entries) I may as well watch this and hope for the best.

Could they have found two people with LESS chemistry? I mean there was nothing! It’s like they were caricatures and cringing with each line they delivered. No emotion in those performances at all. The film didn’t do a whole lot to lose the rape-tastic scenes and every time Ana giggles instead of flinches, I imagine E.L. James screaming at the director for marring her vision.

    So that was awful. LOL

    • I appreciate the fact that the lack of chemistry made it easier to see him as a sociopath/terrifying stalker.

    • I’ve watched a couple interviews with him. When he talks “seriously” about the film, he’s stiff and seems kind of angry and ashamed. But he comes to life when he’s making fun of it.

Having watched them together I think we should invent a new term or something. Because it’s not that they lack chemistry. I mean, there’s definitely something between them. It’s just not attraction.
      Whatever it is it’s a kind of anti-chemistry. Maybe a dislike-discomfort-confusion combo.

It’s a bond that’s created between two people who have survived a tragedy.

Maybe instead of magnetic attraction it’s magnetic repulsion?

  6. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that the film “fixed” the creepy parts of the book. What I’d say instead is that it laid them out clearly and without Ana’s inner monologue “excusing” them with an endless refrain of, “But he’s soooooo hot. My Inner Goddess falls off her chaise longe because of the hotness!!!”

I know a lot of people who enjoyed the books and came out of the movie feeling like they’d just been tricked, only to realize that the book was as — if not more — problematic.

So from that angle, I think it’s a good experience for anyone who did at one point see his actions as romantic to really look at them the way the movie presents them: as fairly terrifying and invasive.

Sarah – I’m glad to hear some fans of the books got more clarity. I’ve seen waaaaay too many fans of the books still ardently defend the books after seeing the movie and part of me worries that because Ana is actually smiling during the sex scenes instead of slightly turned on/mostly terrified that people will say everything is fixed and ignore the fact that he stalked her and is starting to groom her life.

I ALSO have seen some people who read the books going “Well, she leaves him at the end of the movie because she’s putting her foot down. She’s assertive!” And I’m just “…. but you do know how the rest of the books go, right?”

I did something like that after I saw Breaking Dawn Part 1. I’d been laughing my ass off at the cheesiness the entire way through, and after it ended I seriously yelled “that was the stupidest shit I’ve ever seen!” and laughed so hard in the parking lot I threw up a little.

I think I’d throw up for a different reason after 50 Shades.

From what I’ve read, most people feel Dakota Johnson deserved a better movie.

I really hope the director lets loose one day about how difficult EL James was during the shoot. What little has been said hints at a much bigger conflict over the final film product.

And that guy who yelled at the end is my hero of the week.

I liked Dakota Johnson and she was the reason I even enjoyed the movie slightly. I was entertained watching them try to bring some of the worst writing I’ve ever seen to life and try to make it work. Dakota did far, far better than anyone could have predicted. And I thought the director did a decent job as well….you can almost see where the tension was and which battles she lost. I think the biggest travesty in all this is the success and money E.L. James is raking in.

      • Think is, this story could have been excellent in the hands of a competent writer. There were glimmers of possibility throughout all three books. Had a good screenwriter and director not had to cow-tow to James, it might have been a good movie. It wouldn’t have much resembled the books, but it could have been good.

Completely agree. There was that bit that got into the media about how Ana was supposed to shout “Red!” in the elevator instead of “stop!” at the end. Of course, E.L. fought for “stop” and got her way, and the “red” ending would have been better. Watching the movie, I just wonder what else this poor director had to do because of that ridiculous woman…an “author” getting rich on someone else’s characters and basic premise. Makes me sick.

Lmao at the cast wanting Taylor-Johnson to stay. I can imagine the pleas being along the lines of, “Don’t go! You’re the only one who’s able to fight against EL James!”

      This quote from the article:

“The cast allegedly want to remain loyal to Sam, but are locked into the next two movies with ‘water-tight contracts’.”

is both extremely creepy and hilarious, considering context.

So as a matter of curiosity I looked up Taylor’s actor, only to find the beautiful Herc Hansen(‘s actor) looking back at me. Now I have a headcanon that Ana and Chedward died in a Kaiju attack (Much sad. So emotion.) and Marshal Pentecost named his jaeger “Coyote Tango” just to screw with Herc.
