{"id":8638,"date":"2015-01-29T15:06:37","date_gmt":"2015-01-29T20:06:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jennytrout.com\/?p=8638"},"modified":"2015-01-29T15:10:30","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T20:10:30","slug":"dakota-johnsons-facial-expressions-in-this-2014-interview-are-the-best-early-reviews-of-the-fifty-shades-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/?p=8638","title":{"rendered":"Dakota Johnson&#8217;s facial expressions in this 2014 interview are the best early reviews of the Fifty Shades film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was going to schedule this for Monday, but since I&#8217;ll have an <i>Apolonia<\/i> recap that will be done by then and since it&#8217;s been a long time since I was able to have fun with\u00a0<em>Twilight\u00a0<\/em>or whatever this movie is, I thought what the hell, I&#8217;ll just post it when I&#8217;m done.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing the mockery of this cultural phenomenon that has swept in like some sort of alien invasion where only some human bodies got snatched and the rest of us were unaffected and had to pretend to be Nicole Kidman pretending to have been body snatched, I present to you:<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">DAKOTA JOHNSON&#8217;S FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ARE SHOWING US HOW MUCH THIS MOVIE IS PROBABLY GOING TO SUCK.<\/h4>\n<p>In this\u00a0<em>Vanity Fair<\/em> interview in mid-2014, Johnson is filming her role as Anastasia Rose Steele-(spoilers)-Grey. The fist thing I noticed about this interview is how awkward she seems talking to journalists. She reminds me of another young actress, who played a similarly awkward role, in film based off of a bestselling novel that was almost exactly like this one except it had vampires in it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AILpU2L1f6I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The second thing I noticed was how much Johnson resembled a woman predicting her own imminent death. I don&#8217;t want to guess at Johnson&#8217;s state of mind, but her face, at least, seems to know that this movie is not going to be heralded as a critical achievement.<\/p>\n<p>For example, this happened\u00a0as she answered a question about working with her co-star and director:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-29-at-11.09.27-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8639\" src=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-29-at-11.09.27-AM-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-01-29 at 11.09.27 AM\" width=\"604\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-29-at-11.09.27-AM-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Screen-Shot-2015-01-29-at-11.09.27-AM-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, of course, we know that the production was an absolute fucking war zone as Sam Taylor-Johnson and E.L. James fought each other over apparently everything. Of course, the production wants you very much to believe that everything was super fine. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/vf-hollywood\/2015\/01\/fifty-shades-of-grey-sex-scenes\">Producer Michael De Luca told <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Was there a time you thought Taylor-Johnson, or James, was going to walk off the set? I ask De Luca. \u201cNo, because it wasn\u2019t something that could ever be allowed to happen,\u201d he says. \u201cOur mantra through the whole movie was \u2018When debates come up, we\u2019re going to work it out, because this thing is going to shoot, and it\u2019s going to wrap, and it\u2019s going to get released.\u2019 None of us are going anywhere, so we might as well lock arms and have a good time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But in the same article, director Sam Taylor-Johnson said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI kept trying to remind myself that they hired me for a reason. Some people said to me, \u2018I\u2019m surprised you haven\u2019t quit.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Why would you think I\u2019d quit?\u2019 I never quit anything. Not without a fight.\u201d She admits, of James, \u201cWe battled all the way through. She\u2019d say the same. There were tough times and revelatory times. There were sparring contests. It was definitely not an easy process, but that doesn\u2019t mean to say that it didn\u2019t come out the right way.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If there was such can-do, teamwork spirit behind the scenes, why would people ask if the director wanted to quit?<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the co-star component. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentwise.com\/news\/164313\/Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-stars-have-no-chemistry\">Lots of people have commented on how uneasy Dornan and Johnson seem around each other.<\/a> But I&#8217;ll just present this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/50-shades-ew.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8642 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/50-shades-ew-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"50 shades ew\" width=\"277\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/50-shades-ew-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/50-shades-ew-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/glamour-cover.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-8641\" src=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/glamour-cover-746x1024.jpg\" alt=\"glamour cover\" width=\"271\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/glamour-cover-746x1024.jpg 746w, https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/glamour-cover-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/jennytrout.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/glamour-cover.jpg 1119w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the left we have the cover of\u00a0<em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em>\u00a0just after casting was announced, in November 2013. On the right we have the cover of <em>Glamour<\/em> magazine&#8217;s upcoming March issue (scanned by <a href=\"http:\/\/dakotajohnsondaily.com\/\">DakotaJohnsonDaily.com<\/a>, who also have the transcript of the article), over a year and the filming of an entire movie together later. Not at all. We won&#8217;t know until it&#8217;s out. But I think it should probably make fans nervous to see interviews like this one, from last July, in which you can&#8217;t tell if the stars are joking about their lack of chemistry, or grimly acknowledging it to each other while thinking,\u00a0<em>look at us, trapped in our mutual hell as they all laugh from the other side. Well.
