It’s almost as if they don’t want to help the people they’re supposed to be serving.
But if you’re late with your tax payments, just see how long it takes them to inform you.
(Actually, I’ll bet it’ll be even longer, so they can fine you more).
Depends – if they’re the ones who owe you money, you don’t have to file, ever! But y’know, if you owe them $0.03, prepare for lots and lots of red envelopes with scary words in them.
I’ve been trying to get ahold of a human at the IRS for days. I’ve been dealing with identity theft since January. My father has let me use his accountant this year because of all this, and I actually called him in tears and left a message.
I feel terrible about it now, especially since he’s on vacation. Oops.
We had a similar experience with California unemployment. During the furlough a few years back they cut hours to 10a to 2pm and never changed them back. Hubs spent DAYS calling, getting kicked off the line, calling again, busy signal, call again, on hold for an hour, transferred, then kicked off the line. Every day. For four hours. For weeks.
Oh good heavens this. Trying to call the California EDD is a special kind of hell. Went through that when I was unemployed, and then again when I had to call them about my maternity leave (first SDI, then PFL… each time I had questions and nearly missed filing deadlines because it was so impossible to get a hold of anyone to answer them).
One thing that I did discover was that while it was nearly impossible to reach anyone by phone, the email Q&A service actually came through much better than I expected. The two times I wrote to them, I had answers within 24 hours that actually addressed what I needed to know, and in one case I was able to submit a follow-up question that also got answered within 24 hours.
YMMV, especially since these were the SDI and PFL divisions, not Unemployment Insurance, but it may be worth a try.
I was once on hold for over an hour waiting for tech support and the music system was broken. It would play: 1) the last few bars of an orchestral version of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” followed by applause and the first few bars of “Secondhand Rose”; 2) one of two or three messages telling me how important my call was to them; 3) and back to 1). For an hour.
The IRS has had major budget cuts so they had to cut down on almost everything, especially customer help. I work at a library and it breaks my heart when an old lady comes in looking for a tax form and booklet and I have to tell her that we no longer get them from the IRS, as far as I know NO ONE gets them, although she can call the IRS and request one and risk a “curtesy disconnection”. Otherwise she has to do them online, even if she doesn’t know how to use a computer. John Oliver did a whole piece on this clusterfuck. https://youtu.be/Nn_Zln_4pA8
I…I shouldn’t have looked. This is to gruesome. I literally have “call IRS” on my calendar in 2 days. Now I’m going to have nightmares about horrible hold music. O_o

And to think I hung up on my doctor’s office after being hold (with awful music) for only 6 minutes yesterday. I bow at your feet, Jenny!

It’s worse when they owe you money- mom filed taxes in February, and was owed a giant refund. And… it *might* be ready in August. IRS sucks mega hard.

Mwah hahahahrgh! That’s horrific. We have this internet provider here called BT they’re like that.
Ugh. I’m sorry you had to go though that.
