This is my favorite David Bowie song.

Posted in Uncategorized

There’s like, filth and suicide/torture imagery, but it was the 90’s.

There’s not a lot I can say. I’m a Bowie fan. His work touched me the way it touched millions. I don’t know anything about the guy, and I’m not going to be like, “He was such a good person,” because I have no clue. But I do know that his mystique and persona and art did a lot for a kid in Catholic high school who wasn’t quite sure what was wrong with her mental health or her confusing sexuality.

I am so broken hearted over this. He was such a HUGE influence on so many aspects of my life growing up – music, style, gender, everything. As other people have said, he made it OK to be an outsider.

RIP David. You will be sorely missed.

My favourite Bowie songs are Young Americans, Golden Years, & John, I’m Only Dancing.
His music offered comfort/escape during tough times.

    R.I.P. David Bowie

    I love him.

Obviously I knew he was going to die someday, but since he kept his illness such a secret (good for him, I would too) it was a hell of a shock.

Quite simply, the man was a genius. We will never, ever see his like again.

I thought I was the only one (who had this as their favorite Bowie song). <3

    People stared
at the makeup on his face
Laughed at his long black hair
    And his animal grace

Not my favorite, but the first one I thought of when I heard the news, oh boy.

***Trigger warning for discussion of statutory rape***

Bowie’s music is great and his persona is iconic. However he also had sex with multiple children during the earlier part of his career (members of the “baby groupies” who ranged in age from 11-17, though I’ve only seen reports that Bowie himself slept with girls aged 13-15). He was accused of rape in 1987 although the case never went to court.

Just something to chew on while we eulogize him. It’s hard to see everyone hold him up as a hero while ignoring his history of being a statutory rapist.

This has happened with so many different musicians we turn into idols. Like we tend to forget that Elvis married Priscilla when she was sixteen and Jerry Lee Lewis married his preteen cousin. We have a very difficult time separating artists from their art.

People kind of need to figure out that they didn’t know him personally, and they can mourn the loss of the persona and the work without excusing or denying serious allegations.

I agree a lot with your second paragraph. I got into a rager of a FB debate today with someone who said (and this is a legit quote): “Lets just remember him as an artist and not a rapist.”

Uhhhhh no thanks. I’ll remember him as an artist AND a rapist. Most people will never have such a wide-reaching positive effect on the art and music worlds as Bowie did; similarly, most people will not commit rape. We can appreciate the art without excusing or minimizing the harmful behavior.

You can like someone’s art without agreeing with what they did in their personal life.

And conversely, you can also be disturbed enough by an artist’s actions in their personal life that you choose to boycott them. It’s an individual decision.

Of course we can, but it’s important that we don’t give him a pass for committing rape just because we enjoy his body of work.

As a fan of both David Bowie and the film Se7en, I think you’re my favourite person ever 😀

I’m watching this in the future and the video doesn’t work anymore. I’m guessing the song is “The Heart’s Filthy Lesson” from Se7en?

I love and miss David Bowie. As a young teenager I was only interested in seeing the film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence because he was in it, but that film inspired me to move to Japan and begin a beautiful new life here. So I owe him a lot.
