Blood Ties (Jenny’s version): A Patreon update

Posted in Uncategorized

I’m being so lazy and just copy/pasting this blog post, for the most part, from the one I made on Patreon. But you’ve seen my to-do list. You can cut me some slack.

Over on Patreon and Ream, the core Fablemere trilogy is wrapped. All three will be available in ebook and paperback by the end of this year. I’m so happy I got to write it, and I’m so grateful to everyone who supported it.

What happens to that Patreon tier now? What happens to Ream? Well, the Patreon tier will still exist. It’s just call The Library now. Fablemere will stay available for $3 and up patrons, but the focus will shift from just that universe to other works that I’ll serialize before going to paperback and ebook releases. If you read my stuff on the Radish and Yonder apps, it’s similar to that model. Subscribers will see it before it goes to publication.

Currently, I’m working on a rewrite of my first-ever novel, Blood Ties Book One: The Turning. I’ll be releasing the updated version on the 20th anniversary of its first publication, June 6, 2026, as The Turning, as part of the Blood Ties (Jenny’s version) series.

Yes, I’m actually doing the (Jenny’s version) thing, because Taylor Swift re-recording her masters was a massive inspiration to me when making the decision to pursue the rights to these books.

The Turning will be the next work I post on the $3 Patreon tier, and on Ream. It won’t be a weekly upload, however. Fablemere was written with the expectation that it would be serialized, meaning shorter chapters that are all about the same length, between 1,500 and 3,000 words long. The Turning is a traditional novel, and the chapters range between 3,000 and 6,000 words, and I’m rewriting it all. Because the project isn’t finished yet, the uploads might be two weeks apart.

So, take all of that into account and decide if the Patreon and Ream is still right for you. Chapters of The Turning will begin posting on April 1.

Here’s the super cringe blurb it was originally published with:

I’m no coward. I want to make that perfectly clear. But after my life turned into a horror movie, I take fear a lot more seriously now. I finally became Dr. Carrie Ames just eight months ago. Then I was attacked in the hospital morgue by a vampire. Just my luck.

So now I’m a vampire, and it turns out I have a blood tie to the monster who sired me. The tie works like an invisible leash and I’m bound to him no matter what I do. And of course he’s one of the most evil vampires on earth. With my sire hell-bent on turning me into a soulless killer and his sworn enemy set to exterminate me, things couldn’t get much worse — except I’m attracted to them both.

Drinking blood, living as an immortal demon and being a pawn between two warring vampire factions isn’t exactly how I’d imagined my future. But as my father used to say, the only way to conquer fear is to face it. So that’s what I’ll do. Fangs bared.

Accountability!

Wow, I’ve dropped the accountabiliball lately! Having the flu really knocked me off my game. I have been nothing but scattered ever since. I’m not even sure I’ve been faithfully logging all the words I’ve been writing, because I just forget.

One thing is for sure. While I had the flu, I somehow wrote 5,676 words. And that’s not good. I should have been resting and letting my body fight off infection. Instead, I was agonizing because the week I took off work, the week that my husband would be out of town, I was supposed to write. Not lay in bed sick. How lazy of me!

Seeing that total in the spreadsheet shocked the hell out of me. It really shocked the hell of out me. Now, on at least one of those days, I did really enjoy myself. I was super bored with being sick, and being able to use my brain again was amazing. But the other days? Why was I struggling?

It made me think of how guilty I feel if I prioritize any relaxation at all over writing. I go on vacations with my family and try to sneak little moments of work in the whole time. The other night, I wrote on my phone during the intermissions of a hockey game. It would be one thing if it was motivated from love of the craft, but it’s really just motivated by fear. I need to find a way to reframe things so that I’m concentrating on how much I like writing and blogging, rather than how terrible I am for spending a single moment not working.

In other news, my pre-orders for Her Billionaire Boyfriend are sitting at 49, just under my goal of 100. And I’ve made an accountability friend at my out-of-the-house job. She has a podcast and hasn’t recorded a new episode in forever. I told her that I haven’t recorded a YouTube video in forever. We agreed that we would both record them by Wednesday. So, there will be a new video for the Patreon soon, and I also plan on getting a video up that was a request from the Discord, about a truly disgusting book I read.
