STATE OF THE TROUT: 6 minute long rant about Miley Cyrus, plus other various newses

Posted in Uncategorized

Hey everybody! Do you remember back in the day when D-Rock and I had a weekly show here on the blog? We called it Roadhouse and we talked about a lot of random shit. Well, it isn’t back, because D-Rock lives all the way across the country now. But someone on Tumblr was like, “Hey, I like that you’re doing more videos lately,” and I was like, “Yeah, why did I stop?” so here. Have a video in which I rant about how fucked up it is that Miley Cyrus can run around all over the place talking about weed and co-opting black culture when she’s not in any danger of being treated the way black people are treated by our drug laws. And I also touch on why abled people shouldn’t try to center themselves as the loudest voices in the pro-legalization movement.

OTHER NEWSES

Giveaway prizes are half-shipped. If you haven’t received yours yet, it’s probably because it hasn’t made it to the post office yet because I can only fit so many things into my bike basket. Things have been a little hectic lately and while I meant to get them all out last week, it just didn’t happen, so thank you for your patience and I promise the rest will ship tomorrow.

Book News! I’ve been figuring out my writing schedule for next year, and it’s not going to include as many self-pub releases. I’ve got a really exciting joint project I’m working on with someone with the intent of seeking a traditional contract, as well as an old release I’m retooling for similar purposes. But I do have two projects that are definitely slated for next year, Second Chance (which will be two new Ian and Penny dual novels) and an as-yet-untitled second spin-off from the Boss series, featuring Emir as one of the heroes. Yup, it’s going to be M/M.

So, that’s what’s going on in Trout Nation at the moment.

Sadly, Miley Cyrus as the face of weed will probably do more in its favor than anything else that could possibly happen, because people will transfer their liking of attractive-according-to-current-cultural-standards women onto the thing she’s advocating for.

Good points, though, from someone less cynical than me… 🙂

I do indeed remember Roadhouse and miss it! Can you put together a Skype-type video? I know a couple podcasters/streamers who do that, though I don’t know the technical details. Maybe now we’ll just have Road. Or House. Or Adho. I’d be happy with any of the above. 🙂

Thank you for this rant. I’m so sick of seeing weed being seen as good and no big deal when it’s white people advocating it. Then when THC is found in toxicology reports of people of color who were murdered, all of a sudden weed is the worst thing ever and used to demonize the victim. Miley’s “oh I looooooooooove weed te he he” and people thinking it’s cute just makes that shit worse.

Huh. That reminds me of the time my family bought some wildflower seeds. We didn’t know what the flowers were going to be, but upon flowering one looked like a hemp plant. Now that I think on it, dad was rather pleased about that …

I pride myself on being as far out of the loop as possible when it comes to stupid crap celebrities do. Miley especially just seems to be getting dumber and dumber with every stunt she tries to pull.
Am I the only one that finds it amazing that the famous people who actually have talent (apparently) are the ones who end up screwing themselves over the most? I can’t wait until her annoying face is out of the spotlight…

  10. Miley doesn’t have any of those health conditions *that we know of*. It’s her presentation of her weed use that’s problematic (reinforces able privilege), not necessarily her actual weed use.

I agree, to an observer there’s no difference and presentation is a responsibility that comes with privilege.

I actually had a line in there that I cut off, right after the “she doesn’t have cancer, she doesn’t have AIDs” line, because I said, “that we know of,” and I was afraid people would think I was making an AIDs joke, like, har har, slutty Miley got the AIDs or something. But yes, absolutely, it’s her presentation of it.

Honestly, she could come out tomorrow and be like, “I’ve got glaucoma, y’all!” and I’d be cool with her presentation, even. My feeling is that if you’re using weed recreationally and you’re not a person of color and you’re not disabled, you gotta rein yourself in for the good of everybody else, and not run around being an obnoxious jackass. But I wouldn’t police a disabled person for how they present their weed use.

Wait, salvia? As in my beautiful purple flowered plants in my border? Salvia, as in sage? Are there people who sit around and look at plants and think ” Let’s smoke that and see what happens.”? Honestly, there are so many things that just defy logic for me.

Salvia was a kind of synthetic marijuana that was around a few years ago. These days it’s called “spice” “K2” or “Shamen”

Actually, salvia isn’t a synthetic marijuana. It’s a strain of salvia, salvia divanorum. I’d rather smoke salvia for six years than K2 for a day, LOL.

Yep, it’s a member of the sage family. I had two Salvia Divinorum plants . Never had a bad trip, but I wasn’t using fortified leave or extracts– just plain leaf.

Suzy, salvia divinorum is indigenous of northern Mexico, used for shamanistic purposes. It’s not culinary sage. I’ve grown both, and culinary sage is much easier to cultivate.

Salvia can be tinctured into a sublingual solution (hold under tongue, don’t swallow) or into quids (rolls of whole leaf) and chewed upon rather than smoked. Smoking it yields a higher intensity trip of much shorter duration (twenty minutes, tops) whereas tinctures and quids take much longer to kick in, but it’s mellower and lasts around 6 hours.

Is it really worth calling her a bitch? She might be a clueless try-hard and kind of annoying, but blathering about smoking weed doesn’t make her a bitch.

I realize that I’m from a different country where marijuana is decriminalized and that’s probably why I feel differently, but I don’t give a shit. I’ve lose some respect for you, tbh.

I don’t care about the word bitch, I care when it’s used to demean women. And it makes me sad when it’s other women using it in this way. I’m not American and I know it is pervasive to describe women as ‘bitches’ in the states, but it does not come from a place of treating women with respect and I don’t like it.

I don’t care about “bad words”. I think it’s disrespectful to women, and I think it’s also aimed at the wrong person. Why get angry at Miley Cyrus? Get angry at the people who make and enforce the U.S.’s ridiculous draconian marijuana laws. Get angry at the government/society that has more problems with people lighting a pipe than they do with police officers getting away with murder or civilians being allowed to buy assault rifles so they can shoot up a school.

          • JennyTrout
            JennyTrout

I feel like that might fall under “caring about more than one thing at a time,” Cat. Just like you understand that you can care about all those things AND you care about people using the word “bitch.” I can point to Miley’s obnoxious behavior working against the fight for legalization and the acceptance of weed as medical therapy at the same time I can point to the fact that our drug laws are fucked, our prison system benefits off the high number of marijuana arrests, and pharmaceutical companies continually undermine and deter research progress regarding medical cannabis.

What you’re kind of doing with your comment is suggesting that because in this particular video I focused on Miley Cyrus, a pop star who has an enormous platform on which to influence public opinion, I can’t possibly also care about or protest those bad laws or abuses by law enforcement. I can and do talk about all those things quite a lot on social media, and I mentioned them in the video. In fact, they were the entire purpose of the video, to point out that Miley has the privilege of being an open, obnoxious stoner while other, less privileged groups are being persecuted by law enforcement. There’s a whole section of the video where I talk about that.

I understand that you didn’t like my use of the word “bitch”, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about school shootings. I didn’t mention them because they weren’t the topic of the video. And the other stuff you’re saying I should be caring about is stuff that I said not only in the video, but I’ve been saying for a very long time.

Caring isn’t finite. I’m not going to sit here and tell you not to be angry that I said “bitch,” so please don’t presume to tell me what aspects of an issue that directly impacts my life I should or should not address.

I just spent the last couple of days reading through most of your blog archive. Came for the Fifty Shades posts, stayed for everything else! Can’t wait to see more from you!
(Also, I would like to note that our celebrity crush list has a surprising amount of overlap. I was starting to feel like I was the only on with Anthony Head and Craig Ferguson on their list!!)
