  1. OH SWEET JESUS THANK YOU. We're sitting on the couch drinking and laughing so hard at that. You made the night!

God I wish that was the real theme song- I'd probably still be watching the show!

The Ugg boot trend is very obnoxious here in LA. When I was in high school it was the thing to wear them with skirts in any weather. Right now I don't understand skinny jeans. Looking at them makes me feel mildly claustrophobic and I just don't think they're flattering. Not really feeling the current hipster thing either. Though I'm in my 20s and that's how everyone my age seems to be dressing.

Looking forward to next week's topic!

  3. You guys are great!

However, I disagree with you about the 80s. The 80s were totally glamorous! I'm as old as you, so I was also alive during those days, but I wasn't old enough to go out or actually do anything.

I'd watch my much older sister do her pink and blue make-up, style her hair like Wendy James*, and wrap herself in pastelles and way too much perfume, and I wanted so much to grow up so I could do the same. Unfortunately, I was stuck with my bean bag chair and terrible 80s programming on TV.

Then when I finally grew a bit more, the 80s were over, grunge had arrived, and no one looked glamorous in pastelles anymore. I loved grunge, but that too was over way too quickly, and when I was old enough to go out and try to have fun, Britney had arrived, and nothing's ever been good ever again. The end.

  4. There was definitely times when people got dressed up, but as you said, it was in pastels, not the dayglo mismatch crap. I remember a lot of white lace, pink lace, denim, but yeah. That wasn't the stuff people were wearing every day, LOL. We would have looked ridic.

For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why so many people were wearing their slippers outside. You still can't convince me that Uggly boots are not slippers.

What I don't understand is this trend of adding a filter to your photo to make it look shitty. So many pictures nowadays look like they came out of my parents' photo albums circa 1977 and I'm just like… why would you do that?

Ha ha, laughed so hard when you were talking about skydiving. That exact thing happened to me. Strapped to the instructor on the way up in the plane, sitting there wondering why I could feel something firm in my back. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww

I LOVE you guys! I have to start every conversation with my mom that even *remotely* criticizes something like the drone strikes with: “Remember, I was screaming crazy when Bush did it too…”.

Graduated 1986 and I still have my neon hoop earrings in my jewelery box. For our area (Oakland County MI) it was more pegged jeans with leg warmers and shaker knit sweaters.

  8. I live in Uggs all winter because my main transportation is my bike. They go away as soon as the short skirts (without thermal leggings) come out though.

My husband and I were in a tobacco shop last week and were wondering whatever happened to pipes? Pipe tobacco smells so good! Even better than cigars. He thinks his dad may have one stashed away somewhere, so it's a trend from a generation before ours (we're both around 40) but it's one that inexplicably disappeared.

Also: I spent most of the 80s in jeans, band t-shirts, and Converse. Not much has changed there, but this revival is kind of like how in the late 80s people were embracing the hippie look in ways the hippies never really wore it. I'm kind of sad that I'll look ridiculous going back to my 90s look when it finally comes back around, though – babydolls and tights were just so comfortable.

  9. Shaved head. I don't understand it on men but that new half shaved hairstyle for women… It needs to be shaved again every two weeks or so and another thing who would hire you when you look like that?

  10. There was a programme here about tea a week or so ago in which a comedienne, Victoria Wood, reliably informed us that although – as D-Rock correctly pointed out – coffee drinking is on the rise, we Brits still drink three cups of tea for every coffee sold 😉

    Woohoo!

    Lol.

Ok. Trend I don't understand… I don't know if this is a problem in the states as I rarely go in months cold enough to find out but… here a shed load of girls go around outside wearing leggings and tights instead of trousers. Like, not even leggings that are disguised as jeans with fake pockets and zips etc just the regular skin tight see through leggings and tights which allow passers by to see… EVERYTHING x_x. Then they make it even worse by tucking their tops into said leggings and tights! It looks ridiculous. Google image 'leggings are not pants' if you haven't yet witnessed this horror.

Here is a fun chart: http://sadlyleggingsarenotpants.blogspot.co.uk/2011_05_01_archive.html

    [/rant]

Now I'm going to eat a toasted sausage sandwich and indulge in more tea for no writing needs to be done today. Huzzah!

  11. Huh… that chart is fun but… not as fun as Blogger's enforced spacing makes it seem O_o

In Australia, wearing your Ugg boots out and about is considered 'derro' – basically the word equivalent of white trash. They're freaking slippers, albeit very warm and comfy ones, not a fashion statement. It was the funniest thing to spend time in New York and see people wearing them with their jeans and flannel, thinking they were being so trendy! They might as well have just slapped on a mullet haircut and started adding 'but' to the ends of their sentences.

YES! I forgot to mention the leggings thing. They're meant to be worn under things and when they're worn as pants it's like they're naked. More often than not I see it blatantly riding up their tush and I can't believe they don't at least feel that… :/ Maybe it's some exhibitionist thing?

  14. Oh man, you guys started talking about killing healthy animals for food and all I could think of was the third (?) episode of Hannibal where the serial killer dude from the first episode (in a flashback scene) was telling his daughter that, over a deer she killed, they must “honor every part of her.” Which translated over to all the girls he'd been killing and eating and…

You know what? Just watch the show. It'll make more sense. I think they have it on Hulu.

  15. I remember wearing neon colors and leggings in the 90s, but in the 80s I wore lots of denim. The closest thing that we got to neon in the 80s was the Hypercolor T-shirt. Even then, that was late 80s. All the trends that kids are calling “80s” nowadays happened in, like, 1994.

  16. I can explain line-dancing! Two reasons why line dancing is popular: 1. It is for people who love to dance but have no one to dance with. You can go and enjoy shaking your booty with a group of people who aren't trying to touch you inappropriately and you don't have to bring someone with you and force them onto the dance floor so you don't feel like a fool dancing by yourself. 2. It is for people who can't really dance. Every wedding I've ever gone to plays the Electric Slide – and people who will not dance to any other song all night will get up and do the Electric Slide. It's easy and you get to participate without feeling like a moron.

Pegged jeans. I demonstrated that to the college kids at work. One of them actuall said “You're THAT old?!” Fuck them. It' was cool. And I remember neon in the 80's, but is was more accessories than entire outfits.
