Blogging Hiatus

Posted in Uncategorized

Howdy, Trout Nation! Just a heads up that because I’m trying to finish up First Time and in preparation of my annual writing retreat to the U.P., I’m going on blog hiatus. If you’re new here this year, or in case you’ve forgotten, for the past three years I’ve headed into the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with a group of writers, to share a cabin that has no phone, internet, or television, but a bangin’ electric sauna, for a whole week. We have all kinds of zany adventures (you can read about the single most important thing that happened on last year’s retreat here. And about how terrible my friends are here), but best of all, we write. Like crazy. I think I did 30,000 words in a week last time. This time, I’m aiming for 50,000.

Anyway, because getting ready for all this takes time, I won’t be making blog posts unless some extraordinary bullshit happens (and with Grey on the way, it’s entirely possible), and I’ll be scarce on social media (except for Tumblr, which sucks your life away like The Machine in The Princess Bride).

I’ll be back after June 28 with another recap of Grey. For now, enjoy your summer, and know that I’ll be writing about Neil and Sophie while I’m up north. I might even be able to share some when I return.

Don’t leave us alone with the horrible Monster that is the James publicity machine:

And that bit with the camera crew at the end is probably how most of her editors feel.

Out of the two articles I’ve seen today, the other being “I hope there’s a fourth movie from Christian’s perspective”, this one was far better.

Have a blast on your working vacation! And please be sure to say howdy to the ladies for us. We should all be so lucky to have such a supportive group of friends and colleagues around us.

Since you’re probably going to miss the fan squeeing by staying away from the internet for a month (it will probably be all over Tumblr, but that really depends on what crowd you are in contact with), let me give a quick recommendation here for you to find when you have time to spare again:

I think you would really enjoy the series “Sense8” that has gone online on Netflix a couple of days ago. Just don’t go into it expecting a complex scifi mystery. The supernatural plot is really thin and stays unresolved, it’s more of a structural aid for the creators to make an artsy drama about human diversity (race, sexuality, gender, culture, class, etc.) and a bunch of truly decent people helping each other out against social oppression or other violence in their respective subplots. It also features gorgeous scenery porn and quite a lot of sex scenes for such a short series (mostly non-straight), including one that gives new and hilarious meaning to the term “clusterfuck”. The first few episodes are a bit slow, and it takes the show a few episodes to make you care about all the main characters (because they can’t spare much screen time on each), so it might help to watch the character trailers first to get an idea what their subplots are about.
Most people say they fell in love with the show right about episode 4, which also features a scene that encapsulates the general ‘put a smile on your face’ feeling of the show:

I have a sneaking suspicion the whole appeal of Grey is for the reader to enjoy vicarious compliments from Christian. Personally, I can’t wait to hear him thinking over and over again how Ana is beautiful and strong and has a low width-to-height ratio, just like a steel-and-glass-and-steel-and-sandstone-and-steel skyscraper. Unearned praise makes my panties get all wet. (I’ve got sentient panties. Don’t judge me.)

Looking forward to/dreading June 28th! Enjoy your hiatus!
